193 SLEEPING TO SUCCESS CHAPTER 19 SLEEPING TO SUCCESS PATRICIA E. TAKACS, D.M.D. What is success? According to the World English Dictionary, success is defined as the favorable outcome of something attempted, or as the attainment of wealth, fame, etc. How we define success will depend on what our goals are: money, education, sports, politics? It also will depend on how old we are when we achieve success. One thing is certain, sleep is an integral part of the road to success. I'm sure you would agree that the following people are considered to be successful in their respective fields: Rosie O'Donnell, Shaquille O'Neill, Regis Philbin, Rick Perry, and William Shatner. What they all have in common is that they have sleep apnea. NFL great Reggie White and Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead both died in their sleep from sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is defined as a sleep disordered breathing in which the sleeper stops breathing longer than 10 seconds at any given time. The more times this occurs while sleeping, the greater the risk of detrimental damage to our body. If left untreated, it will lead to an increase risk of stroke, high blood pressure, heart attack, Type II Diabetes, GERD, fibromyalgia, atrial fibrillation, dementia, and ultimately premature death. Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) includes snoring. And Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is not only a phenomenon of adults, but of children
